Matchams Riverbank Stabilisation

Stabilisation of riverbank behind existing sheet piles – November 2007

Location

Matchams, Hampshire

Client

Bournemouth & West Hants Water

The existing riverbank was subject to washing out and collapse due to corrosion & weak points in the sheet piles. We designed and implemented a successful solution which consisted of the following: Excavation of loose material to 5m depth in 3m sections within half manhole support boxes, installation of stone backfill inside heavy duty anti rot 1 tonne bulk bags, cover with geotextile layer and reinstate original landscaping while protecting the integrity of steel tie rods within the work area. All this was in an underwater environment due to the constant ingress of river water. Specialist long reach excavating plant had to be used to allow full depth access to the excavation just 300mm from the rivers edge. Work was carried out with a safety boat and rescue equipment on permanent standby.
