We were awarded the contract for the Mardyke Project in September 2009 and work started on site in October. The steel bridge is supported on 15m deep bored pile foundations and piled foundations were also necessary to support the crane outrigger loads for the bridge installation. The existing ground conditions necessitated surcharge and a settlement period for the approach embankments with associated monitoring.
The access to the site was restricted and the route for the 26m bridge and the 200 tonne capacity crane was along the sea defence wall some 1000m from the nearest roadway.
The project was completed on time and to budget together with associated improvement works to the Purfleet Museum car park and the pedestrian Military Bridge.
